The Booksellers Association of the United Kingdom & Ireland Limited

Press Release service for new bookshops

The BA is delighted to offer all new BA members a one-off media blast to regional media (local papers and online websites, regional radio and TV news) prior to your opening, advertising your business and opening date.

This is with the understanding that the BA can't offer any guarantees of coverage and so we’d encourage you to also go ahead with any media outreach you already had planned yourselves.

You’ll need to be happy to have your email put at the end of the press release for media to contact you directly.

The information we need from you is:

  • - A confirmed opening date and postcode (to determine the regional media we approach)
  • - A summary of your bookshop - where it is located, what it will be selling and any unique features in terms of the building, the business model or additional functions.
  • - A summary of you as the owner(s) - what was your career prior to opening a bookshop, any achievements professional or personal or interesting facts about you.
  • - A quote from you - detailing why you've decided to open bookshop, why you've chosen what you'll stock and focus on, and why in this location in particular.
  • - Confirmation of any local media you wouldn't want the BA to contact
  • - Confirmation that you are happy for your local MP to be informed, and potentially for them to be invited to visit your shop (our Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Laura McCormack, would invite them if so)

- A sample press release for a fictional bookshop can be found here. This should give you an idea of what the BA would be producing and circulating.

The BA will, of course, circulate the final press release back to you for approval before sending it out.

We hope new members will find this free service a very useful way of engaging with local media and your MP from the start, as well as hopefully producing some great media coverage for your new shop as you open to the public.

If you have any questions, or are a BA member and would like to sign up for this one-off media blast, email our PR Manager [email protected]

Media Opportunities Mailing List

The BA is committed to trying to get as many - and as wide a variety of - bookshops as possible to be featured in the media and, whilst we cannot control what stories the media run nor how they tell them, we want to make sure as many of you as possible have the chance to be involved, if you so wish it to be.

With this in mind, we have created a 'media opportunities mailing list' innovative, where signed-up BA members can put themselves forward to be included in media coverage secured via the BA's press outreach.

Do contact the BA's Press and PR Manager, Simon Armstrong, on [email protected] if you are a BA member and wish to be added to the 'media opportunities mailing list'.
