Starbird by Sharon King-Chai announced as September’s Children's Book of the Month

Starbird - Sharon King-Chai

The BA Children’s Bookselling Group has announced Starbird by Sharon King-Chai as its Independent Booksellers’ Children’s Book of the Month for September.

From the author of Lucy Ladybird and Animalphabet, King-Chai’s new book tells the story of Starbird, whose songs weave the richest dreams and delight everyone who hears him, until the Moon King traps him in a cage and his voice begins to fade away.

On the book’s selection, Sharon King-Chai said, "I am thrilled and honoured that Starbird has been selected as the Independent Booksellers' Children's Book of the Month. Indie bookshops are the heart of the high street and I love the experience of walking through the beckoning shop door in anticipation of what new worlds await. New characters to fall in love with, new places to visit, knowledge to be learned, feelings to be shared, all accompanied by a passionate gatekeeper that is the bookseller. Let’s go out and support our local indie!"

Emma Bradshaw, Head of Campaigns at the BA, commented: “Starbird is a beautiful story about freedom and love, with illustrations that bring Starbird’s songs to life. We are thrilled that the panel has selected King-Chai’s exquisite story as Children’s Book of the Month for September.”

Chosen by a panel of independent booksellers from a range of new children’s titles, the Book of the Month showcases independent bookshops’ expertise at promoting and selling children’s books.

Independent bookshops around the UK and Ireland will be promoting Starbird throughout September. The BA will be supporting the promotion of the Children’s Book of the Month through social media and promotional materials. Booksellers will also be supporting the Children’s Book of the Month on social media.
