Giving to Charity
Giving a book is the theme of this new adult initiative for World Book Day, with which we want to encourage people to consider giving books to others.
To help generate footfall at your own bookshop for the duration of the offer, contact your local media about your participation. Adapt the template press release provided by World Book Day and send it to your local newspapers and/or radio.
While customers can choose to give their free second book to a friend or family, World Book Day would like to encourage shoppers to give their free book to charity. You may like to nominate a local charity who you can encourage your customers to give their free books to – is there a local charity for whom the books could raise valuable funds, or could you forge links with a local hospital or prison? You could even set up a receptacle in your bookshop to collect the books for the charity.
How to use the template press release
In the template you will see where you need to insert the name of your bookshop, its location, and information about your chosen charity if you choose one. You can also include a quote from someone at the shop.
In your quote you could say:
- How pleased you are to be participating in the initiative
- Highlight any special themes/series you are pushing at the moment
- Comment on the charity you would like your customers to give their books to, if you have chosen one
How to contact your local media
Some general media tips:
- Take a look at a recent edition of your local newspaper and you will be able to find the contact details for the News Editor. Alternatively look at their website, or call the newspaper directly to check. With radio you can often find out on their website how to contact the producers, or just give the station a call.
- Most journalists now prefer emailed information, so send the press release over in an email. If you email to more than one contact at once, make sure you follow correct email etiquette and ‘blind copy’ (bcc) your list of contacts (it’s against the data protection act to circulate lists of email addresses). If you don’t hear back, give the contact a call a day later to check they received your email.
- Make sure someone is available on the telephone number you give for further information and respond to requests as quickly as possible.
